Welcome To The New CalCAPA.org

I am incredibly excited to welcome you to the CALCAPA website, the online portal for the member association that is made up of the 60 Federally designated poverty fighting Community Action Agencies; covering the width and breath of the Golden State.  Community Action was founded in 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson’s Vision for A Great Society that ushered in Civil Rights reform, Economic Opportunities for all citizens, and began the War on Poverty.  Poverty like disease is stubborn and much like our counterparts in the medical community continue to fight against a variety of diseases that persist; poverty continues to persist.

The U.S. Census Bureau released data that shows, using figures that measure all incomes and living costs, more than 20 percent of the people in California live in poverty.  California’s housing cost adjusted poverty rate factoring in the high cost of California housing determines the poverty rate to be 23.4 percent, compared to the national average of 15.9 percent.  Without safety net resources, 38.1% of children in California would live in poverty.

Every day the staff at our 60 Community Action Agencies are working with individuals and families through a variety of innovative strategies to equip them with the tools that will lift them out of poverty.  From the Redwood Forests, to the beaches of southern California, to the Central Valley; California’s Community Action Agencies are making a difference in the lives of low income Californians by providing support, hope, and opportunity.  We encourage you to explore the website and we also invite you to join us by donating your tax deductible contribution or volunteering with CALCAPA or one of agencies across California!

Remember the words of President Nelson Mandela of the Republic of South Africa, “overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity, but rather it is an act of justice”.
